Some of these offers are legitimate but others turn out to be scams perpetrated by predatory publishers. It is wise to take a few basic steps to learn more about a new or unfamiliar scholarly journal.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"line-height: 28.8px;\">About the Journal<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Discover\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/library.stonybrook.edu\/research\/journals\/\">peer-reviewed journals<\/a>\u00a0using library search tools<\/li>\n<li>Examine the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/currents.plos.org\/disasters\/aims-and-scope\/\">aims and scope<\/a>: are they appropriate for your research?<\/li>\n<li>Review past issues: does the content look topical and credible? Are the authors known to you?<\/li>\n<li>If open access, is it registered in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doaj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)<\/a>\u00a0The DOAJ vets journals before listing them.<\/li>\n<li>Does the website provide complete contact information: email, street address, working phone number?<\/li>\n<li>Does it have a valid online\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.issn.org\/\">ISSN<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Journals are disseminated via\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/guides.library.stonybrook.edu\/az.php\">research databases<\/a>\u00a0(academic abstracting and indexing services) such as JSTOR, PubMed, EBSCOhost, ProQuest (even Google Scholar). \u00a0A journal website should say\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/aai\/ai\/\">where it is indexed<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>Is it indexed in the places it says it is?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Has it been assigned ranking(s)? E.g.\n<ul>\n<li>SCImago Journal Rank (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scimagojr.com\/journalsearch.php\">SJR<\/a>) Indicator<\/li>\n<li>Journal Citation Reports (<a href=\"http:\/\/guides.library.stonybrook.edu\/jcr\">JCR<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.journalmetrics.com\/\">Journal Metrics<\/a>\u00a0by Scopus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Are its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/rights-sharing-embargoes\">policies<\/a>\u00a0on peer review, open access, copyright publicly available?\n<ul>\n<li>If it charges publication fees, are they clearly stated and explained?<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo\/issn\/0028-0836\/\">What are the copyright policies<\/a>? Will you be able to preserve copyright over your work? If you are required to meet a public access mandate to share your research, are the copyright policies compatible? \u00a0In many open access journals, authors retain full copyright to their work and give the journal a \u201cnon-exclusive\u201d right to publish the work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>About the Publisher<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Where is it located? Use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo\/search.php?la=en&amp;fIDnum=|&amp;version=&amp;mode=advanced\">SHERPA\/RoMEO<\/a>\u00a0to discover details about publishers, including country of origin.<\/li>\n<li>Website\n<ul>\n<li>Stable web page<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mla.org\/Publications\/Journals\/PMLA\">Basic contact info<\/a>: publisher, contact details, editorial team, editorial\/advisory board<\/li>\n<li>Description: scope and focus, publication frequency, author guidelines<\/li>\n<li>Fee policy clearly stated<\/li>\n<li>Free of grammatical errors and typos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Is there a digital preservation policy in place?<\/li>\n<li>If open access, is it registered with the OASPA (<a href=\"http:\/\/oaspa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association<\/a>)?\u00a0Many of the largest open access publishers are members of the OASPA, though there are legitimate open access publishers that do not belong.<\/li>\n<li>Publisher\u2019s permissions\/ sharing policy\u00a0available on website?
